Maple Heights man dies in hit-skip crash in Cleveland

August 8, 2022 by Obral, Silk & Pal, LLC

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Police are searching for a suspect who killed a man in a hit-skip crash during a police chase on Sunday.

Cameron Crews, 26, of Maple Heights died after he was struck by a vehicle on Grand Division Avenue that was being pursued by Garfield Heights police.

Police spotted a silver 2018 Infinity QX60 speeding south on Turney Road. After the driver made an abrupt U-turn and began to travel north on Turney Road, an officer attempted to stop the car. The driver sped away, police said.

During the chase, the Infinity struck a 2009 Hyundai Sonata that was driven by a 59-year-old woman. The driver of the Infinity then crossed the double yellow lines and struck Crew’s 2009 Chevy Cobalt.

The driver of the Infinity ran and eluded police. Police later discovered that the vehicle was stolen out of Brook Park. A loaded firearm was also recovered from the vehicle.

Crews was taken to Cleveland Clinic – Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, where he later died. A 24-year-old occupant in the vehicle was transported to MetroHealth for a broken knee. It is unknown if the driver of the Sonata reported any injuries to police.

Cleveland police’s accident investigation unit will examine the crash, and the Garfield Heights detectives will continue the search for the suspect, police said.
